Old Men in Fancy Dresses Don't Matter to Me

The Vatican has garnered attention recently for reiterating its long-standing teaching that it is the #1, 100% True Religion (tm) and that Orthodox Christianity is a close #2. Next come the Protestants (including the Anglicans who I'd bet are #3 on the charts) and then everybody else.

Every time this statement is-pardon the pun-resurrected Protestants and other non-Catholics get itchy and complain about the Church's hubris. Happily we live in a time when the Vatican and the leaders of the free world are not in bed, so frankly if the Pope wants to toot his own horn I don't care.

Having said that, it would be a mistake to throw out the baby with the bathwater, tempting though it may be. I was reminded this by coming across a quote from Fr. Benedict Groeschel, a Franciscan who also appears on EWTN as a TV host. I've watched his program from time to time, and while we don't share the same beliefs down the line, he is generally likeable and reasonable. I find this piece from him inspiring:

The love of God is like an infinite river…it flows with an irresistible power, and its deep current is unhindered. You and I are in the river of God’s love. If we swim with the tide, we will float along with that love. It will bring us to wherever we are supposed to be.
