Holiday Shuffle

Today is Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember American women and men who have lost their lives in military service. May they all rest in peace.

But I think today is also a day to remember how far our world must go yet before we reach our true potential. Inasmuch as we should honor our war dead and the difficulty they and their loved ones have endured, we should also strive to end unnecessary human violence. Whether it is Virginia Tech, Iraq, Iran, the West Bank, Northern Ireland, or Chechnya we must work for sanity in human relations. Human beings are valuable; we should treasure one another instead of killing one another.

So I post this prayer, made for Thanksgiving Day, but I think apropos for today as well:

Prayer - Robert R. Walsh

(A Thanksgiving Prayer)

Eternal God, source of all created things, we would give substance to our thankfulness by resolving to make right use of the gifts we have received from thy bounty.

With thy gift of the senses we would fashion and preserve a world of beauty for all. With thy gift of reason we would engage in a responsible search for truth. With thy gift of compassion we would build a world of justice and mercy. And with thy gift of being we would walk together in peace.

Thus, in gratitude, may we become faithful servants of thy glorious ongoing creation. Amen.
