Intelligent Design vs. the E-meter

I don't understand the need by some people (insecurity?) to push their religious identity onto others. Case in point, the recent activity surrounding the teaching of "Intelligent Design" in public schools.

We live in a country where one cannot throw a rock out the window without hitting a dozen houses of worshp; why do some people insist on making our political institutions their pulpits?

Itelligent Design does not fit the criteria of scientific theory, anymore than an "e-meter" in Scientology fits the criteria of medical instrument.

A million years ago, shortly after the Earth cooled, when I was in Junior High School science class we learned about evolution. We also learned the history of human beings trying to explain the origin of life and the planet. We learned about Genesis; we learned about Brahma and his golden egg; we learned about Izanagi and Izanami. None of this was presented as credible competition for the scientific enterprise. And yet I still believe in God, as I'm sure 99% of the students who passed through that class do. What are these ID-pushers so scared of?
